Meet the New Sports Director!

Hi Everybody!

It is with great pride that we introduce the new Sports Director at High Hopes Sports & After School. Steve Schaffer has agreed to join our staff to organize and run all sports leagues and clinics. He will be working alongside Shirley Sears; our Afterschool Director.

Coach Steve has extensive experience. In the summer of 2007, he stepped out in faith and left a long-time engineering job to create the Central Texas Homeschool Athletic Association of Texas; also known as the Saints of Texas (http://www.chaasaintstx.com). It is a Christ-centered PE program utilizing city and county parks. It has grown to all parts of the extended Austin area and even into several San Antonio neighborhoods.

Coach Steve is looking to continue in his role as Owner/Administrator of the Saints, but has decided to leave much of the on-field work to his team. He then became aware of the opportunity at High Hopes and has taken on the challenge of growing our sports program to what it needs to be; pouring into kids’ lives in positive and Christ-centered ways.

Here is some additional information about Coach Steve from the Saints’ website:

“Teaching athletics wasn’t a concern for Coach Steve. His life has been spent active in athletics, playing high school sports, college basketball, coaching select clubs and upwards sports. In May 2010, Coach Steve was inducted into his hometown of New York Sports Hall of Fame, for his accomplishments on the courts and ball fields.

Ministering to children was a more daunting proposal. Through prayer, and encouragement from friends and familiy, and strong belief that God can and will use whomever he wants to spread his Word and serve his children, Steve stepped out in faith, retired from his engineering job in July of 2007, and opened three Saints programs in the Austin area in August of 2007.

Each day he thanks God for the opportunity to serve the Christian home school community. There is so much satisfaction in seeing children who first come to the park apprehensive and maybe scared, and then seeing them grow in confidence as they realize, ‘They can do all things through Christ,’ even if it’s simply kicking or hitting a ball.  Coach Steve states, ’I’ve come to know so many wonderful families and see their children grow so much. Imagine a job where a child will run up to you to tell you, “This Sunday I’m getting baptized!” Wow!’”

I think you can see the heart of Coach Steve above; and why we’re excited he is on our team. He’s also excited to bring this same approach and attitude to High Hopes Sports & Afterschool.

I ask that you welcome and pray for Coach Steve as we all work together to continue to bless kids and families in our community. To God be the glory.

-Mike
